Teaching

My passion for teaching stems from my deep fascination with the different routes that ideas travel through the world. As a result, my pedagogic philosophy centers the excitement new combinations of ideas can generate. I ask students to think of education as a collaborative endeavor, to see themselves as co-producers of knowledge in the company of others, to engage critically but generously with new and often difficult ideas, to scrutinize how they shape our everyday experiences, and to consider how changing them also changes their world. If in a certain sense our words are always borrowed, I want students to come to see reading and writing as processes of discovery, of finding the right words with which to express themselves. I especially cherish my role as an advisor, and I have been extremely fortunate to work with highly motivated and creative students conducting original research in a range of settings.
